Anything I really wanted to do, Nate found a way to do it.
I’ve always wanted to build my own house. I’m a very creative person, I love design, and I work in real estate. At the end of 2017, the time was finally right to do it. So I got to work researching what features I wanted and brainstormed with my architect to design the perfect home for me and my family’s needs.
The original builder I was going to work with was moving, and she highly recommended Nate to replace her. She told me he did a quality job, that he had lots of integrity, and that he was good with people and relationships. I found out she was right.

Throughout the process, I could tell Nate went above and beyond just putting a product out there. He told me early on that he tries to build houses as if they are his own, when it comes to quality and attention to detail. He made sure the home was good quality.
As a Realtor, I’ve been in a lot of houses. You can tell the difference between stuff that’s sloppy and stuff that’s good quality: The corners are straight, the sheetrock is level, the trim is put together correctly and evenly, the painting job is neat. The materials themselves can speak a lot, too. During the building phase, I could tell everything looked steady, strong and secure.
Every tradesperson who came through the house would always comment, “Wow, this is really well-built! Who’s your builder?” I referred him over and over; they were so impressed with Nate’s work. When we had our final inspection, the inspector was having a hard time finding anything to fault. He said it was one of the most well-built houses he’d seen in a long time.
The build did take longer than originally planned. The weather was a factor. But also the more changes you want to make and the more specific things you want, it’s going to take longer. Anything I really wanted to do, he found a way to do it. He made it work! He gave input on my ideas and would let me know if there were extra charges or other considerations involved. I never heard him say, “I don’t know if I can do that.” It was always, “Let’s work it out and talk it through.” I wasn’t under a time crunch, and the process went well.
Nate and his guys were always calm. They were able to solve problems quickly and address any bumps in the road. And Nate’s communication was great. He listened to my needs, would get more info when I wanted it, and would answer my questions. I asked a lot of questions! I relied on his expert opinion, since he’s done this a few times.
Nate’s team was a pleasure to work with. I was over here a lot during the build, and the guys he has on his crew were great to work with. They were personal, friendly, very polite and really hard workers.
One of my favorite parts of the house is the open-concept kitchen, which is great for gatherings. It’s open to the living room with vaulted ceilings and a big stone fireplace. And windows. Lots and lots of windows. My other favorite part is the playhouse I asked Nate to build for my grandkids under the basement stairs. It’s an awesome feature in what is usually wasted space. This has been a great house to be quarantined in. It’s beautiful, comfy, cozy, welcoming and warm.

Nate was very flexible with the evolution of the project.
We had hired Nate to finish a rec room in our basement in late 2018. We had also been sitting on some plans we had for a kitchen addition, and the timing was finally right, so we rolled right from one project into the next. We started around March, and Nate got us into our kitchen right before Christmas that year!
Nate was a good fit for us. We had a lot of ideas, and during those first couple of meetings, we sometimes would weave on and off of our original plan. Nate was good at adapting and being able to do whatever we put down on paper.

Nate was a good fit for us. We had a lot of ideas, and during those first couple of meetings, we sometimes would weave on and off of our original plan. Nate was good at adapting and being able to do whatever we put down on paper.
For example, the original plan had a big window, but when we looked at the space, we realized it would make a great bay-window eating area instead. Nate said, “We can change that!” We also originally thought we wanted the whole room completely open, but Nate helped us make some structural modifications. He’s got such a builder mentality; he’s structurally really smart and great with substantial reorganizing.
A lot of other companies would have demanded change orders for these types of things, but Nate was very flexible with the evolution of the project.
We live in a really old house, and we wanted somebody who could make an addition fit with our 1920s home. Nate’s craftsmanship, especially when it comes to trim work, and his attention to detail fit our project. He kept the character of the house. He recreated an arch we had to move, and he went to so many different wood suppliers to find trim that matches the original. He made the old flow into the new. We had bids that would have gotten this addition done faster, but we wanted to have it done right. We are really happy with his work.
Nate is obviously a super-nice guy—non-confrontational and laid back. That’s a bonus in a contractor! I don’t think I ever saw his blood pressure go up. He’s very gentlemanly. We’ve got five kiddos, and one of the risks you take with a home remodel is living with the people working on your project for who knows how long. Nate did a great job of making sure anyone in the house was kid-friendly, spoke appropriately, and even changed their radio stations if they needed to! Our kids ended up loving the contractors. They got really close with Nate, Doug, the carpenters and the younger workers.
My favorite part of the addition is our kitchen island. It’s huge, and we tweaked the design a lot. It’s where our whole family ends up multiple times a day. Oh, and my laundry room. I used to do laundry in a dirty, unfinished basement, and now I actually enjoy it. Ok, enjoy is a stretch, but laundry isn’t miserable anymore!
We definitely plan on using Nate again when we’re ready to move to phase three of our plan—a new garage.

After meeting Nate, I decided to have Nate do it all.
When we first started talking about finishing our basement, I was 90 percent committed to doing the general contracting myself. I thought I’d save some money, and I had a list of trade guys from my neighbor, who works in construction. That was the plan: get quotes and do it all myself. But I’m friends with Nate’s younger brother, Matt, and he connected us. After meeting Nate, I decided to have Nate do it all.
It was that human connection. He gives you the facts and keeps it realistic. He didn’t do what other contractors sometimes do: slap a quote in front of you that’s way too high or unrealistic. Nate’s demeanor just made me comfortable with him right away.

My wife, Kara, has a degree in interior design. She mocked up how she wanted it to look on construction paper, to scale. Nate brought that plan into the real world. I’ll be honest: I’m pretty particular, and Kara is also particular on the design side. I don’t like it when people tell me one thing when you know something else is true. Nate wasn’t like that. He always tried to do what we wanted to do, but if he couldn’t, he explained the reason why.
Our theme for the space is family. There’s a playroom with an entire wall of built-in cabinets, a whole bar, a reading nook with built-ins with space for a full bed, and a media area. The media area is my favorite part. Ever since we had kids—we have two young boys—we haven’t really been able to go to the movies, so we went all-out on that space.
This summer, when we wanted to re-do our patio, I was getting really high bids from hardscape companies for the building portion of the project. So I called Nate to see if he could build our gable porch, pergola and swing stand; he got it done for almost half of what the other companies were bidding. What makes Zehr Homes different is Nate. Businesses sometimes forget that your company is your people. I would call Nate no matter who he worked for. He’s an honest guy, and he does a good job. It’s not some big corporate company: It’s Nate. I like that small-town atmosphere.
